It’s hard to not get caught up in the recent wave of awareness that is being given to the importance of good gut health. Functional medicine is linking gut health with Alzheimer’s, autism, ADHD and other behavioral disorders. Most recently we are hearing about its link to allergies.

As we wait to see how this research unfolds, many of us are doing what we can to stay on top of our health by tending to our gut to obtain and maintain optimum health. We can begin improving our gut health by increasing our consumption of probiotics, or beneficial microorganisms.

Unfortunately finding a good probiotic on our health store shelves is not as easy as one would think. At the moment, there are no regulations on probiotics and there are strong arguments suggesting that the majority of the probiotics we find in health stores may not be what they claim on their packaging. There is even doubt as to whether the probiotics are alive and active when they hit the store shelf.

The good news is that eating to maintain a healthy gut is not a novel idea, and cultures all over the world have been eating fermented foods for this reason for years! By making your own fermented foods you not only save money, but you know that what you are getting is an all-natural product that is alive and most effective.

Rejuvelac is an all-natural fermented drink which aids in producing healthy gut flora and has a plethora of other health benefits (see below), it tastes like lemonade (kind of!) – and it’s super simple to make at home. All you need is 1 cup quinoa, 1 gallon filtered water and a couple of jars.

Benefits of rejuvelac:

  • Promotes beneficial bacteria in the intestines
  • A vegetarian/vegan source of B12
  • Fights bad intestinal bacteria
  • Aids in reducing inflammation
  • Improves skin health
  • Corrects digestive dysfunction
  • Aids in producing and absorbing vitamins, enzymes and oxygen

Here is a 7-day guide to make your own rejuvelac. Enjoy!

  • Day 1: Rinse and drain 1 cup of quinoa (you can use rye, wheatberry, kamut, etc). Rinse the quinoa and soak in water overnight)
  • Day 2: In the morning, discard the soak water and leave quinoa to sprout. In the evening, rinse your sprouts with clean water and drain.
  • Day 3: Rinse your quinoa in the morning and in the evening and drain. Leave them to sprout.
  • Day 4: Place sprouted quinoa into a container and cover with 1 gallon of filtered water to create the rejuvelac. Cover with a mesh lid or a towel to allow the liquid to breathe during the fermentation process. Leave to ferment for the next 3-7 days. The longer you let it sit, the stronger the flavor (I personally prefer a strong quinoa rejuvelac so let it sit for a week.)
  • Day 5-6: Leave the rejuvelac to ferment.
  • Day 7: When the rejuvelac is ready, drain the liquid into another jar and put in the fridge. You can add half the amount of water to the same quinoa and make a second batch of rejuvelac. Drink the rejuvelac daily for improved gut flora and health! Share this recipe with a friend!
